Tuesday 19/7/2016

Anastasia Georgaki, Associate Professor, Laboratory of Music Acoustics and Technology, Music Department, University of Athens

Coordinator: Laboratory of Music Acoustics and Technology, Fotis Moschos, Thanos Nikolopoulos, Konstantinos Saivanidis

[Morning] Seminar: Heterotopian Soundscapes of oracles (3 hours)

The scope of this seminar is to present different soundscape theories in composing historical site-related soundscapes or electroacoustic music works based on the theory of Heterotopies (M. Foucault).

In the theoretical part (3 hours) of the presentation we will focus on the linkage between acoustic ecology and biomusicology to the soundscape theory and composition. We will also present, some student’s projects which have been carried out at the laboratory of Music Acoustics, Music Department, University of Athens and promote the collection and analysis of different categories of sounds in specific archeological spaces and focus on the linkage of the landscape from the present to the past through history, poetry and philosophy (Tettix, Aedon, Meton).

[Afternoon] Workshop: Soundwalk and archeoacoustics (2 hours)

From Castallia Source to Korykeion Andron: Archeacoustics and collection of sounds. During this soundwalk we will listen the mythical and historical soundscape of Delphi through a special itinerary, collect sounds and zoom in special acoustic phenomena.

Dr. Frank Pecquet, Composer/Associate Professor, Visual Arts Department, Universite Paris Sorbonne I, France

[Morning] Seminar - On sound design (3 hours)

A historical perspective. Notions such as sound tracking, sound identity or sound design, musical arrangement, sound mapping and musical ambiance qualifies the real dimension that current music can include giving rise to different genre of music: from sound arts to generative design as well as sound walks to interactive multimedia environments.

[Afternoon] Workshop - “From sound design to musical design”. The Oracle Project (2 hours)

He will work with a team of students to develop part of his project on Oracles. Design, oriented towards facts and objects more specifically, reduces sound to practical use. On the one hand, a sound recording allows access to amplified sound and its infinite reproduction through machines that increase added value. On the other hand, the concept of reproduction is constitutive of design objects, it represents the objectification of sound. In both cases, the environment influences the auditory reality, by contributing to the process of creation.

Thursday 21/7/2016

Dr Mark Bokowiec & Dr Julie Wilson-Bokowiec

[Morning] Seminar – The Bodycoder© System (3 hours)

Dr Mark Bokowiec and Dr Julie Wilson-Bokowiec will give a presentation about their interactive electro-acoustic music practice with the Bodycoder© System. Dr Mark Bokowiec will discuss the technical and compositional methodologies used in the realization of interactive compositions for performer and Bodycoder© System, with particular reference to the choices made with regard to the mapping of sensor elements and Kinaesonics: the coding of real-time one-to-one mapping of sound, sound processing and spatialization to gesture and its expression in terms of hardware and software design. Mark will also talk about the evolution of his interactive practice developed over the last 20 years.

Dr Julie Wilson-Bokowiec will talk about the specific skills of the performer: musical, gestural and perceptual associated with live interaction and her work with the Bodycoder© System. Julie will outline the links between dialogue and interaction, feedback loops, psychoanalysis and cybernetics as she sees it, and will discuss the greater social and cultural significance of interactive practice as a means of gaining insights and understandings with regard to the self within society.

[Afternoon] Workshop: Creating visual voices through the Βodycoder© System (2 hours)

The aim is to create an improvisation using the Bodycoder© System by exploring the urban soundscape, traditional/ancient Greek instruments, Greek language both ancient and modern and a range of texts in order to creatively examine the idea of dialogue, interaction, mediation (oracular) and cybernetics. We invite also visual artists/ postgraduates interested in using live data generated by the Bodycoder System as raw information for visualisation.
