A fictional letter of Emperor Hadrian to his soldier and lover Antinous. Hadrian is in Athens to participate in the Eleusinian mysteries in the autumn of 124. From the theater of Dionysus he writes this letter on the subject of the world and love. Love is treated as an inner self-awareness experience. Through the paradox of love, the great ruler of the world, man conceals a promise of absolute pleasure that is experienced  as pain.
