IN MEMORIAM OF GISELE RΙCHARDSON
An infrared photo exhibition of Kostas Daoultzis
Gisele Richardson, a Canadian citizen, a cosmopolitan (having lived in different countries around the world), a resident and at the same time a lover of Hydra, was my benefactor and my mentor. She was the one who presented me my very first serious camera (a Pentax ME) with which these photos were taken, on occasional visits to the island, with a black and white film – and some of them with an infrared b&w film.
The reason for my choice of this particular means was the dazzling light during the day, which was reflected on the white-washed walls and which at the time could probably be captured on an infrared film, which again would depict the white areas with a relative glare. So, walking up the hill towards the Villa Helios (Gisele’s residence on the island) which overlooks the town lying at the foot of the hill and around the port, I tried to depict this game of light and shadows. The result can be seen on the photographs.
